The outstanding 2013 Angel's Peak, which is a blend of 78% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot, is a beauty. Loads of licorice, graphite, blackberry and blackcurrant fruit jump from the glass as well as some chocolate and mocha. It is a heady, opulently textured wine to drink over the next decade.

Soft and fleshy on entry, showcasing fine depth, focus, purity and a range of flavors, with crushed rock, red berry, spice and mineral notes that turn elegant and silky on the finish. Drink now through 2022.

For maximum enjoyment, drink this almost all-Merlot blend now. It shows ripe, lush black-cherry, red currant, plum and bacon flavors that finish spicy and sweet tasting. The tannins are thick but smooth. —S.H. abv: 14.5% Price: $48

Rich, viscous, dark fruit and slight mocha aromas, nicely textured, dark fruit leading with black cherry, raspberry, and chocolate. Score: 90

Peppery and plush on opening; lots of core fruit, rich textures, full body, brown spice accents, very enticing.

Terlato Family Vineyards in California's Napa Valley are paying homage to the Bordeaux Grand Crus of Pomerol, St. Emilion and Margaux with three 'Peak' wines. The first in the series is Angels' Peak, a Pomerol-style blend, based mainly on Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The forward aromatics are lovely berry-spice with cedar notes, leading to bright pure fruit flavors, good acidity, blackberry and spice, with good length and structure and nicely integrated oak. This is an opulent, lush wine with great balance and length.

Heady aromas of stewed plums, coffee and pepper govern the nose of this eggplant-colored wine. Succulent flavors of bell pepper, cherry, raspberry and jammy strawberry are well integrated with friendly tannins. Big wine needs big food, so try a porterhouse with garlic mashed potatoes.
