The 2012 Proprietary Red Blend Cardinals' Peak, a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot, reveals a big, lush, Pomerol-like, mulberry and black cherry fruitiness with attractive spice box notes in the background. Round, opulent, generous and seductive with a long, seamless finish, this consumer-friendly, complex 2012 can be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years. This is the Napa outpost of the Terlato family from Chicago. Tony Terlato and his children are icons/legends in the fine wine business having started Paterno Wine Imports and building it into a commercial powerhouse. There interests extend to producing wines in California, and they have acquired a number of estates, most notable Chimney Rock, and also produce wines from Terlato Family Vineyards.

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot, this offering is defined in light, ethereal layers of soft, floral red fruit. The mix of pomegranate, cassis and cranberry is buoyed by natural acidity and a streak of black pepper.

This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc exemplifies the Terlato style, which is classic, complex and drinkable early. It has rich, thick tannins and flavors of blackberries, mocha and cedar. The finish is long and spicy. —S.H. abv: 14.5% Price: $48

Fruit-forward, showing ripe, sweet blackberry, cherry, blueberry and cocoa flavors, elaborately uplifted by toasty oak. Made in the modern style, it's rich and delicious now.

Dark and purple, this is a full-bodied, richly textured wine, with firm structure and well-integrated tannins; distinct aromas of black currant, black cherry, cedar and classic cassis and cocoa; will age well many years.

Rich and supple, this is a lavishly oaked Napa Valley red. It's a blend of cabernet sauvignon (76 percent, from Terlato's estate vineyard in Rutherford) with merlot. The dark fruit holds its own against equally dark coffee scents of oak, finishing clean. For a grilled t-bone.
