A lot of wimpy Merlots have given this classic variety from Bordeaux a bad name. In the States it has been passed off as a cheap wedding wine and famously dissed in Sideways, but in Bordeaux this wine is distinguished above the rest, taking second place only to Cabernet Sauvignon in reputation. The grape is known for its easy drinkability a la a fresh fruit-forward style with lower tannins than the Cab.
