Sauvignon Blanc
Its distinct aroma makes this wine the Chanel No. 5 of French whites. Originally a grape indigenous to the Bordeaux region of France (What else is new?), it has a well-stamped passport claiming property in New Zealand, South Africa and California. Take a whiff and note aromas of freshly cut grass, herbs like sage and thyme, grapefruit, pineapple. When aged in oak some of the characteristic tartness is lost as they take on creamier taste. The un-oaked versions tend to be the most desired. Of late, new zeal for its tropical fruit-forwardness and bright acidity has made New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc a regional champ.
