Knowing a wine's style and varietal will help you to quickly identify flavor components and potential pairings without having to sample the wine. Within each style category wines may range from light to full bodied, but characteristics – such as black fruit in a Malbec, tannin in a Cabernet Sauvignon, or herbal notes in a Sauvignon Blanc – are predictable.
