Overview

1694 honors the birth year of the Rust en Vrede winery. The Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon used in the production of this wine are from Single Vineyard selections. Proprietor Jean Engelbrecht has worked to establish Rust en Vrede as one of South Africa’s premium red wine estates, with full-bodied and complex wines that reflect the uniqueness of the Helderberg terroir. A full bodied wine with great balance and structure. Cigar box and vanilla spice flavors are prevalent with a good lengthy finish.

Aging

The Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz clones were vinified separately. Matured in 100% French oak barrels for 18 months, and then bottle matured until release.

Fermentation

Primary fermentation took 7 days, followed by a 21 day maceration. Pumped over and the cap manually punched down 4 times a day. Malolactic fermentation in barrels.

1694 honors the birth year of the Rust en Vrede winery. As Jean Engelbrecht has such great affection for Shiraz, this is the only blended wine Rust en Vrede produces that is Syrah dominant. Both the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are from Single Vineyard selections. Proprietor Jean Engelbrecht has worked to establish Rust en Vrede as one of South Africa’s premium red wine estates, with full-bodied and complex wines that reflect the uniqueness of the Helderberg terroir.
